Well, after nearly a month training down here in Guadalajara its almost time to lace them up and go out and compete. I feel that I am ready, my training for the World Chapionships has carried over to my training for the Pan American Games. I am in shape and my weight is good. I am very greatful for the support system around me that allows me to compete at this level. My wonderful wife Jessica Silva, who puts my mind at ease knowing that she is doing good at home with our three boys Taythan, Thiago and Thales. I am also greatful for the coaching staff at the NWRTC Coach Steiner, Coach Zalesky, Coach Roberts and Chad Lamer for helping me along the way. I am ready to get the taste out of my mouth from my performance at the World Championships. I dont feel that I wrestled out in Turkey, and I work to damn hard to leave anything out there on the mat!!!!

2011 World Championships finished last night in Istanbul, Turkey. Russian won the team race over Iran and USA. Jordan Burroughs was crowned World Champion with an impressive win over 2 x World Champion from Russia and then beating Iran in the final.

Israel Silva lost first round to Mongolia and was eliminated from the competition because the Mongolian lost before he reached the finals. Heinrich Barnes lost to Lopez from Cuba, but was also eliminated because the Cuban lost in the semi’s to the eventual Champion from Iran. Lopez ended up with the Bronze.

We are happy to returning home and realize we have a lot of work to do if we want to put ourselves on the stand in London 2012. Currently we are sitting in Amsterdam waiting to board our plane in a few hours. Thanks for you support without your help with the NWRTC we would not be in the place we are at right now.

I got my 1st round draw, I will be facing Mongolia, he was 3rd in the Asian Championships. This morning coach Steiner and I went over film on my opponent to get familiar with his style of wrestling. I feel confident and ready to get on the mat. Last night our NWRTC teammate Nick Simmons fell one match short of winning a medal, he had a great tournament, I feel that he will be prepared for 2012. Today its my turn to get it going and tomorrow Heinrich will get after it.

Nick Simmons starts his quest for a World Title in 7 hours. Yesterday he looked great at weigh-ins, mentally he is in a good place and is ready to go. I will head over to the WOW Hotel this morning and workout with Heinrich at 9:30, then put Simmons through a good warm-up and get his lungs blown out at about 10:30. Then we will head over the venue at 11:30 and get ready to start wrestling at 12:30pm. Nick has drawn the German (Ewald) first round. He will take it one match at a time and work through the bracket. There are 45 guys in his weight class. Israel Silva will weigh-in tonight at 6:30pm. He had a great workout yesterday and will be ready to go when he gets his chance.

After the workouts yesterday. My uncle Steve and I had not eaten all day so we took the metro to another area of the city. We went up near Taxsim Square. My uncle, who is a history buff, informed me that this was the area where the Battle of Gallapoli took place back in World War Two. He said the Germans were stopped from taking over the Black Sea, which they wanted to use to get supplies to the Eastern Front. It is nice having him over here because he knows all the history. The only thing he did not do is brush up on the Turkish language for me so we could communicate a little better.

I will keep you posted on today’s events. I feel good about Nick competing today and hopefully jump start Team USA. They have yet to get a medal. They Women were close losing to Bronze Medal matches yesterday. They also have two more chances today.

Over and Out!

Day #3 in Istanbul:

It was a great day in Istanbul yesterday. Sorry I did not post yesterday I got back to the hotel at about 10:30 and hit a wall. I think the travel is catching up to me. We started the day off yesterday with a little breakfast and then left to catch the metro to go put Simmons, Barnes, and Silva through a lite practice. Barnes and his South African Team introduced us to the game of Rugby to warm-up. It is quite a different game than Football. Needless to say I was not a star at it. I think I got in their way more than any contribution. However, it served its purpose and got them warmed up for practice.

Izzy looked pretty good in his practice at first but wore down a bit. I just do not think he put enough food in him throughout the day the day before and he did not have enough in the tank. I think the travel is also hitting him as well. Time always helps with the acclimation and he will make the adjustment with his nutrition and will have a better practice this morning.

Heinrich looked very strong! His energy was high and looked sharp. He really just needs to mentally prepare for the battle ahead.

Simmons had a lite drill session and looked very good. Nick weighs in tonight and wrestles tomorrow. He will have to make one hard cut this afternoon to get to weight and then it is time to shine. He is looking good and feeling good.

After the practices yesterday I went over to the venue to watch the first two weight classes of the Women’s Freestyle competition to support USA. It has been a rough start for Team USA. Thru the first three days USA still does not have a medal. Greco Roman failed to place and the first two weights of the women failed to place. Today three more women have their chance. I will let you know.

After the competition we (my uncle Steve and I) returned to our room for a bit and then went to grab a bite to eat. We went further into town and found a littel authentic Mexican Restaurant. I am not sure how it is authentic here but it was pretty good. Coming back we had to stop at the local dessert shop to satisfy my sweet tooth. Their desserts are soaked in honey i think but whatever it is they were pretty good.

Time to go.

Over and Out!

Hello everyone,
Istanbul is great. There has been some great matches this last two days with the GR. I feel good and ready for this weekends matches, I’ve had a good couple of weeks up to now. I trained at the OTC for about 10 days and then left for Hungary afterward where I trained until I got to Istanbul. Now all that’s left is to keep focused of what I came here to do and to be ready to fight till the end of every match when I step out on that mat.

Until next time.

Here we are Day # 2 in Istanbul. Just for a little history Istanbul has been known by two other names dating back more than 1500 years. First is was Byzantine during the Byzantine Empire, then Constantinople they Rome of the East, and finally Istanbul. It was also referred to as the crossroads of the world because it connects Asia, Africa, and Europe. Many battles have been fought here in Istanbul. I believe that the Turkish Flag is red because it symbolizes all the blood shed here over the years. Russia wanted to take over Istanbul for many years because they wanted a warm sea port that would connect them to the Mediterranean Sea. Needless to say it is a very desirable place to live and that is why there are 14 million people here.

Our day started out good. We had breakfast at about 7:30am this morning, which consisted of bread, hard-boiled eggs, and tea. I skipped the hot dogs, but may have to try them just for the sake of it tomorrow. Then at 10:00 am, Israel Silva and I took the Metro for 45 minutes to Sinan Erdam Sports Arena, host of the 2011 World Wrestling Championships. Izzy met up with the rest of the Mexican delegation at the arena. Then Izzy and I took at cab ride to the WOW Hotel which is where we met up with Nick Simmons for a mat workout and sauna. Nick looked good and felt good. Nick drilled hard and worked on a couple of focus areas for about 45 minutes then hit the sauna for 15 minutes. After Simmons got done I let Izzy throw me around for a little bit. He definitely felt powerful to me and was moving pretty good. He drilled for about 30 – 40 minutes and did a few sprints and then we hit the sauna for about 15 minutes. After workout we tried to find Heinrich Barnes because he is staying at the WOW Hotel but did not catch up with him today. Hopefully we will get in touch with him tomorrow.

After workout we left the WOW hotel and went back to the Sinan Erdam Sports Arena to catch up with my twin brother Terry Steiner, who is USA National Women’s Coach. I watched part of his practice and then hopped back on the metro to come back to our hotel Art Otel. All in all everything is going smooth just trying to adjust to the time.

USA Greco Team is finished with 6 weights and no medals. I hope that Team USA can turn it around starting tomorrow. I will keep you posted.

Over and Out!

We have arrived in Istanbul, this is a huge city of about 12-14 million people. We took the subway and taxi to our hotel. I was not sure I would make it alive the way the taxi driver was cruising thru the streets, but non the less we have made it. I still have not seen Heinrich Barnes and Nick Simmons. I hope to meet up with both of them tomorrow at workout. Izzy is doing fine just tired like all of us from the travel. The Art Hotel is definetly not a four star hotel in fact it may be a a 1/2 star hotel. My room is literally a 8 x 10 with two twin beds and a bathroom you can shit, shower, and shave all at the same time. I guess it is not a bad idea just not something I am use to doing. I am learning how to multi-task though so my wife will be happy when I get home.

Tomorrow we are going to workout in the morning. We are going to try to get on the mats and get the travel out of us. It will take a couple of days, but these guys are used to it. They will man up. I will let you know how the workout goes and how all of these guys are looking tomorrow evening. As for now I have to get some shut-eye.
